At Peace Lily, we are committed to creating sustainable solutions for your sleep. All of our products, including the Peace Lily Mattress Protector , are made with 100% natural materials. Our mattress protector in particular is made with certified organic cotton to provide a safe and breathable sleeping surface for everyone.
A common question that we receive about the mattress protector is regarding if it is waterproof. While our mattress protector is perfect for preventing skin oil, dead skin cells, perspiration, and minor accidents, it is unfortunately not waterproof. There are a few important reasons for this which we will discuss below.
Why is the Peace Lily Mattress Protector not waterproof?
The main reason the protector is not waterproof is to ensure it remains non-toxic and safe for your sleep. In almost all cases, adding the waterproofing feature to the natural organic cotton would require the use of chemicals that can be toxic to you over time. Most mattress protectors that are waterproof are made with plastics like vinyl and polyurethane which have been connected to health concerns.
The other reason the protector is not waterproof is due to the issues surrounding the breathability of the fabric and mattress it covers. Since almost all waterproofing contains some form of plastic in its layering, this can prevent airflow in the material and with your mattress. This airflow is necessary to prevent the buildup of moisture in the mattress, which can lead to mould.
Another issue with making the protector waterproof is the impact it has on the eco-consciousness and the natural feel of the fabric. The organic cotton material is ethically and sustainably sourced to minimise our environmental impact while providing you the plush feeling you expect with cotton. This element of the product, which is consistent across every product for Peace Lily, would be lost if the waterproofing layer was added.
If you anticipate frequent spills or accidents in the bed, particularly if you have young children, a waterproof protector is a necessary and practical solution. Just remember to remove it and let the mattress air while washing the protector to let your mattress breathe. However, if you are not expecting accidents and prefer a more natural, comfortable feel, our mattress protector is the ideal choice.
