Latex can usually have an initial distinct smell that can come from the material while it is still fresh. This is because the natural latex that is used in our products comes from the sap of rubber trees, which is well known for possessing a unique scent. This is a mild scent that only a few people notice (as it is quite faint) which can be described as vanilla-like, sweet, and slightly nutty.
Our latex products undergo rigorous testing during production to ensure they do not contain any hazardous chemicals and will not produce off-gassing, making them safe even for infants. All our products are non-toxic to promote a healthier sleeping environment so you can feel safe and comfortable.
Only a small portion of individuals may detect the natural latex scent, as it often goes unnoticed by most. Typically, it can take anywhere from a few hours to 1-2 months for the new odour of latex to dissipate, depending on the user’s sensitivity to smell. If you are particularly sensitive to smells, we will outline some suggestions below to help expedite the removal of any lingering odours
Most people can often mistake this initial smell for off-gassing, but the material contains no VOCs so it is not harmful. Our latex products, like our mattress and solid latex pillow, are made from 100% natural latex and do not contain any harmful chemicals within the material. We also do not use any artificial scents or chemicals to cover up this smell. Unlike some manufacturers that use synthetic fillers, we commit ourselves to only using natural latex without any synthetic additives that can cause off-gassing.
Use bicarbonate soda to absorb the odours
Bicarbonate soda is a great natural alternative to eliminate odours. It is easy to use and good at drawing out any lingering odour that you may experience. Here is how to use it for your latex product:
-
Ensure the latex product is clean: Remove any bedding from your mattress and vacuum the product to remove loose particles. Pillows must remain in the inner zippered cover.
-
Apply baking soda: Sprinkle a general, even layer of dry baking soda over the entire surface of the product.
-
Let It Sit: Leave the baking soda to sit on the latex product for several hours. This gives it time to absorb the odours.
-
Vacuum: After the allotted time, use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment to thoroughly vacuum the product and remove the baking soda.
-
Flip the latex product: Repeat all of the above on the opposite side of the latex product.
-
Repeat if necessary: Depending on the strength of the natural latex smell, you may need to repeat the process over the next 2-4 months.
Ensure your latex product has proper ventilation
It is important that your latex product is used in a room that is well-ventilated with no moisture. This can help lingering smells to dissipate as the material has a chance to breathe. Ensure that you have nothing blocking the airflow of the product (i.e. items under the bed blocking airflow to the mattress).
It is crucial to emphasize that exposing Latex to direct sunlight outdoors should be avoided. However, it is recommended to regularly air out the product during the first few weeks after purchase. You should continue to do this beyond these initial weeks from time to time, but you can do it more frequently during this period to help the smell dissipate quickly. You can utilise windows or a fan to facilitate airflow and consider leaving the latex product uncovered when changing your bed linens on wash days.
