All our latex products, such as the Latex Mattress, are made with 100% natural Dunlop latex. We do not use any synthetic fillers and there are almost no chemicals in any of our bed products. Rest assured that the latex used in our products is free from harmful chemicals to provide you with healthy, non-toxic sleep solutions.
However, the natural latex is only liquid when it is initially harvested. To create the solid form needed for our products, the latex is taken through vulcanization, which introduces small amounts of naturally occurring chemicals. This is the industry standard that almost all natural latex products follow.
The latex in our products is given its solid form through zinc oxide and sulphur. It is important to note that these are naturally occurring chemicals that are only used in small amounts (for mattresses this is less than 4%) as they are necessary to change liquid to solid rubber sap. This is the standard for latex foam production as latex is not enough to remain in a solid state. During the final stages of production, the latex undergoes a thorough washing process, to remove any residual chemicals used during its formation.
Heating the raw rubber with sulphur allows the latex to transition from a liquid to a solid, while the zinc oxide helps protect the latex from early oxidation. Sulphur creates cross-links between the rubber molecules, enhancing the strength, elasticity, and durability of the final product. Zinc Oxide ensures that the sulphur cross-links form more efficiently and at lower temperatures, to produce a more consistent and high-quality rubber latex foam.
These naturally occurring chemicals help to ensure the highest quality and durability of our latex products. There is an even smaller amount of ammonia placed in rubber sap to maintain quality in the delivery process. Ammonia is used as a preservative for rubber latex to inhibit bacterial growth and premature coagulation in liquid rubber. The added ammonia is evaporated and washed away during the later stages of the production process.
However, the quantities of these chemicals would not cause any sort of health issues or concerns, especially for products with an organic cotton cover layer. We are committed to ensuring that your sleep is safe and free from anything that can cause any harm to your health.
