How do I measure mattress indentation?

If you feel that your mattress has a noticeable indentation, we will guide you through how to measure this accurately. A small and obvious indentation over time is something normal in the mattress that can be expected as it is subjected to regular use. It is important to note that regular indentations that are less than 2.5cm are considered within a normal range of indentation and do not qualify for a warranty claim.

Our mattresses are made with premium natural latex, known for its durable and responsive properties. Natural latex is often regarded as one of the longest-lasting materials in the mattress industry and will retain its shape for many years. However, some external factors can cause our mattresses to sag which we will discuss below.

Measuring mattress indentation

There are rare cases where you may feel that the mattress has a bigger indentation than normally expected. We will guide you through how to measure this as well. Please note that our warranty covers visible indentations equal to or greater than 2.5cm (which have not been caused by an unsuitable bed frame).

  1. Place the mattress on a flat surface (like the floor) for an accurate measurement
  2. Use something like a broomstick to create a straight edge on the top of the bed (should be long enough to cover the entire width of the mattress).
  3. Use a ruler or tape to measure the distance between the straight edge and the deepest indentation (avoid stitching to ensure that measurements will be accurate).
  4. If the difference is more than 2.5cm, take a photo as evidence and get in contact with our support team at info@peacelily.com.au

What can cause mattress sagging?

Here are a few factors that can contribute to the indentation of your mattress. It is important to note that most causes of mattress sagging are external to the material itself:

  • Inadequate Support:

The biggest factor is the bed frame used to support the mattress. Bed frames that provide weak or flexible support are not able to adequately support the mattress. A suitable bed frame will be a solid slatted bed foundation that will provide sturdy support evenly distributed across the frame.

  • Standard Wear and Tear:

It is expected that a mattress will slowly lose some of its shape and strength over time as it is regularly used. This is common with all types of mattresses, but natural latex mattresses generally have the strongest resistance to sagging.

  • Inadequate Rotation/Flipping:

If you are using the same area of the mattress for a long time it can wear down quickly and create an uneven sleeping surface. That is why we recommend rotating the mattress once a month for the first 6 months and then every other month thereafter to evenly distribute this wear and prolong the mattress's lifespan. This also helps to prevent the indentation of the mattress over time..

  • Moisture and Humidity:

When there is moisture left within the mattress, it can weaken the materials to also create sagging in the mattress. This can be either because the mattress is used in a humid climate or the mattress has not been properly protected from or dried after spills and sweat. It is important to remove any moisture from the mattress as soon as it occurs to avoid this.

Quick tips to maintain the life of your mattress

There are a few tips that you should follow that will help make your mattress last:

  • Regularly rotate your mattress. We recommend that you rotate your mattress once a month for the first 6 months, and then every 2 months after this point.
  • Use a solid slatted bed frame that will efficiently support a heavier-than-normal mattress and will encourage mattress breathability. We have a full guide that will help you choose the right bed frame for your mattress.
  • Keep the mattress in a well-ventilated room to avoid any build-up of moisture and humidity. You can also open the windows and use a fan to help ventilate the mattress. The mattress should be completely dried after a spill, or a spot clean, before putting the bedding on.
  • Use a mattress topper to help protect and enhance the comfort of a mattress. You can choose between our luxury plush and firm latex mattress topper to suit your comfort preferences.
