If you have had a liquid accident on your mattress, you have come to the right place to learn how to clean it. You may have accidentally spilled a drink on the bed, or your dog may have had an accident. Whatever the situation we have got you covered with these instructions.
Before we delve into them it is important to consider some things. Firstly, if you notice any spills or accidents on the mattress then you should clean this immediately. The longer the liquid is left on the mattress increases the risk of it potentially leaving a stain or causing mould. It is important to note that the organic cotton cover of both our mattresses is not removable, which is why we recommend having a mattress protector as an extra barrier. While our mattress protector can absorb some light moisture it is not waterproof, so timing is of the essence.
Secondly, for the instructions below we recommend using a spray to clean accidents, but please use this sparingly and make sure the area is completely dry after cleaning. We advise leaving the mattress stripped of sheets and the mattress protector during the day to air it out, only covering it again when you are ready for bed. You should also check the mattress cover regularly for mould after a spill.
Cleaning instructions for stains
Please follow these instructions when cleaning the mattress:
- Grab some white vinegar and a spray bottle: White vinegar is an excellent cleaning agent that can be used to clean stains and deodorise the material.
- Create the cleaning solution in the spray bottle: Combine and mix an equal amount of water with the white vinegar in the spray bottle.
- Spray the solution onto the mattress stain: Make sure you spray sparingly across the whole area of the mattress stain, and leave this for several minutes.
- Gently dab the area with a damp cloth: You can use cold or warm water, but make sure the cloth is not too wet to prevent adding moisture to the mattress (encouraging mould)
- Dry the mattress: Use a fan or a hairdryer on the low/cool setting to help dry the mattress. It is essential to dry the mattress well so that no moisture remains in the material, which will prevent the growth of mould.
- Use bi-carb soda on the mattress: Once the mattress is dry, sprinkle a generous amount of bicarbonate soda over the patch and let it sit for 30 minutes. This will help absorb any remaining moisture. Vacuum the bicarbonate soda off the mattress and monitor the area over the next few weeks.
Following these steps should help you tackle liquid spills and reduce the likelihood of further damage. For mattresses subjected to more liquid accidents, such as those for toddlers transitioning from a cot to a big kid's bed, we recommend using a waterproof fitted mattress protector to provide an extra layer of protection.
This can include mattresses for kids, elderly people, or pets that sleep on them. You can find many great options for waterproof fitted mattress protectors online which can provide the protection the mattress requires.
