Congratulations on upgrading your mattress! You have made a great decision and we are here to help you start your journey for better sleep. It can be a fairly straightforward process, but there are some things to note that we will discuss as we go along.
Firstly, you may have noticed that your mattress has come compressed in a box. At Peace Lily, our mission is to deliver unparalleled comfort and quality straight to your doorstep. Our "mattress-in-a-box" model is not just about convenience; it's a thoughtful approach to reducing the carbon footprint associated with shipping.
By compressing our mattresses, we ensure not only safer transport and effortless maneuvering during delivery but also a significant reduction in emissions during transit. This also makes it easier for you to maneuver and unbox the mattress in the room it will live in. Just remember to be careful with the box as the wheels can scratch your floor.
Steps to unboxing and setting up your mattress
This is just a brief overview of the steps involved in setting up your mattress. For more in-depth information, please check out our full guide.
- Move and open the box in the room it will live
- Move the box into the room it will belong in (being careful with the wheels at the bottom to avoid scratching your floor). Make sure to have 2 people when moving the mattress. It can be surprisingly heavy, so it is best to unbox it in the room it will stay in.
- Pull the mattress out of the box
- The easiest way to do this is to place the box on the side, and slowly slide the mattress out.
- Find the edge of the outer covering and start to unwrap the mattress
- The mattress is roll-packed and wrapped with a protective wrapping fabric and polythene bag. Use scissors to cut the wrapping but take care to avoid accidentally cutting the mattress cover or latex foam.
- Roll out the mattress and place it on your bed frame
- Ensure you are using a suitable bed frame that can support a heavier-than-normal mattress. It also needs to be the right size so the mattress has space as it expands. Ensure that the mattress is not placed directly on the floor, as it could lead to the formation of mould.
- Dispose of the packaging and get ready to sleep on it
- All the packaging for the mattress can be recycled once the mattress has been fully unboxed. Once the mattress has been placed on the appropriate bed frame, it will roughly take around 2 hours to be ready to sleep on. You can shake the corners of the mattress to help with this initial decompression.
Now your mattress is ready to use!
Please note that the mattress will need time to naturally decompress and return to its original size once it has been properly unboxed. Learn more about the decompression time for the Latex Mattress and Hybrid Mattress, as well as tips that may help with the process.
Things you may notice when your mattress is unboxed
Upon unboxing, it's typical to observe some wrinkles or size variations, especially at the corners. This is a normal behaviour of the natural latex, so understanding and navigating these initial observations is crucial. Here are some things you may notice:
-
Wrinkles: It's common to see some wrinkles on your mattress when you first unbox it. Don't worry, these wrinkles will smooth out in a few days. This happens with natural latex, which wrinkles when squished. To speed up the smoothing, regularly use the mattress. Your movement and weight will help stretch the material and get rid of wrinkles faster. Also, try giving a gentle pull or shake from each side to help speed up the unwrinkling process.
-
Corner Decompression: Since we abstain from using polyurethane foam, the corners of the mattress might be the last areas to fully decompress. To hasten the process, simply lift each corner, give it a gentle shake while holding the top edge, and let nature take its course.
-
Size Variations: Your mattress can exhibit slight variations in size; however, there's no cause for concern as this is entirely normal. Given that our products are handcrafted and made from natural materials, there can be small variations of up to 5cm (approximately 2 inches). In 90% of cases, these variations resolve, and the mattress settles to its true dimensions after 4-6 weeks.
-
Potential Smell: You may notice a soft, sweet scent (comparable to vanilla) coming from the mattress once it has been unboxed. There is no need to panic as this smell is natural and harmless, and will disappear over time. This is a natural latex smell that can be initially potent once the mattress is opened but will dissipate over time as you use it. Please read this article to learn more about this scent and tips to help it dissipate.
The mattress should be rotated once a month for the first 6 months, and then every 2 months thereafter to help with mattress decompression and longevity. As the mattress fully decompresses, your sleep will reach the pinnacle of tranquillity. Our mattresses and the decompression process testify to our passion for sustainably sourced comfort, ensuring serene sleep for nights to come.
As your mattress unfolds, so too unfolds your journey toward sustainably comfortable sleep with Peace Lily. Should you require additional assistance, our support team is always on standby to assist you.
